Creating a Holistic Lifestyle: The Beginners Guide

Take simple, intentional steps towards a holistic lifestyle to bring more calm, clarity, and well-being into your days.

Ever feel like you’re being pulled in a thousand different directions, and no matter how much you give, there’s never enough left for you?

I can relate all too well.

For years, overwhelm was my norm. As a mom to nine kids, running businesses and trying to hold everything together, non-stop go-mode felt like my only option. I’d wake up exhausted and fall asleep with the heaviness that I still hadn’t done enough.

I craved peace in my life, something steady to hold onto. I knew I needed to slow down, but I couldn’t — so much, and so many, depended on me. My energy was at an all-time low and I had nothing left to give. Something had to change.

The Breaking Point

Instead of reaching for yet another band-aid to numb the stress — like unhealthy snacks or collapsing in front of the TV after the kids were finally asleep — I made the decision to dig deeper. I was determined to find a real solution. I knew I couldn’t keep ignoring the root cause, and that’s when I became drawn to a more holistic approach to life.

I began by making more intentional choices and creating small, healthy habits — learning to care for my body, mind, and spirit in ways that didn’t add more to my days, but naturally fit into my life. Slowly, but surely, things started to shift.

These principles became my foundation and an unexpected anchor that eventually carried me through a difficult divorce. Because I had these tools, I was able to rebuild my life with purpose instead of falling apart.

If you want more calm and simplicity but are uncertain where to begin, you’re in the right place. It might feel like too much, but I promise, you don’t need to do a complete overhaul to make it work.

This isn’t about adding more, rather it’s about making room for what matters. This realization changed my life. It also inspired me to become a holistic health coach so I could help others find their inner calm.

The Foundation for a Calm and Centered Life

One thing a holistic lifestyle is not is a one-and-done. It’s small, intentional shifts you build up over time. Think of it as exploring what works for you and your individual needs, one step at a time.

“Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.” — Vincent Van Gogh

I believe a great place to begin is with your evening routine. We all have a routine, whether we realize it or not. The question is whether it’s working for or against you. Having a healthy, positive routine is like hitting the reset button at the end of the day, setting the stage to wake up calm and clear.

The key is to start small with a simple routine that fits easily into your life and build on it over time. An evening or morning routine is a great place to begin — it’s manageable, and you’ll notice an immediate impact on how your days feel.

Holistic health is about viewing the parts of a whole — understanding that physical, mental, and spiritual health all work together to create balance.

What Is a Holistic Lifestyle?

A holistic lifestyle nurtures the connection between mind, body, emotions, and spirit. By aligning our daily choices with what truly matters, we create positive energy that flows into every area of our lives.

This approach beautifully aligns with the universal human need to feel healthy, balanced, and living with purpose. As Stephen Covey explains in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, aligning our daily actions with our values helps us live with intention and create lasting change.

A holistic lifestyle helps us find joy in the present moment while planting seeds for a prosperous future.

The Benefits of Holistic Living

✔️ Better Physical Health: A healthy diet rich in whole foods, regular exercise, and quality sleep boosts energy levels and reduces the risk of chronic conditions like heart disease.

✔️ Emotional Resilience: Mindfulness practices and meaningful connections with loved ones help lower stress, improve emotional health, and provide strength during life’s challenges.

✔️ Spiritual Connection: Slowing down, practicing gratitude, and spending time in nature nurtures a sense of purpose and alignment.

✔️ Personal Growth: Holistic living encourages small, intentional changes that help you feel more connected, resilient, and aligned with the person you want to become.

✔️ A Happier Life: When our mind, body, and spirit are in harmony, we naturally feel more at ease. A holistic way of life helps prioritize what’s truly important, laying the foundation for a happier, more fulfilling life.

How to Start a Holistic Approach to Life

Creating a holistic lifestyle doesn’t mean overhauling everything overnight — it’s the small steps and meaningful changes that ripple into every area of life.

Assess Your Daily Routine
Take a moment to reflect — do you have healthy habits? Are your actions supporting the life you want, or are they holding you back? Awareness is the first step to change.

Focus on Nutrition
Shift toward whole foods — think fresh vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats. Incorporating Blue Zones principles, like eating mostly plant-based meals can make this step even easier. Learn more in my article, What are Blue Zones? A Comprehensive Guide

Move Your Body with Intention
Physical activity doesn’t have to be intense to be effective. Start with what feels doable — like a brisk walk, yoga, tai chi, or stretching. A walk in nature combines gentle movement with the restorative power of the outdoors, calming our nervous system and mind.

Practice Mindfulness
Stress management is an essential part of holistic living. Set aside time daily for mindfulness practices, whether it’s mindful eating, meditation, or deep breathing (here is one of my favorite breathing techniques by Dr. Weil).

Prioritize Rest
Sleep is foundational for emotional health, cognitive function, and energy levels. Prioritizing sleep quality is essential to recharge our body and mind. Create a calming evening routine to make sure your rest is restorative and supports your overall well-being

Overcoming Common Challenges

  • Time Constraints: One of the most common struggles I hear from clients as a holistic health coach is finding the time for change. A simple solution is integrating small habits into what you already do — like a quick stretch while waiting for coffee or mindful breathing before bed.

  • Consistency: Focus on progress, not perfection. Small changes, done regularly, lead to big results.

  • Mindset Shifts: Remember, this is about honoring yourself, not following rigid rules.

  • Overcome Negative Feelings: Acknowledge negative emotions, but don’t let them control you. Use mindfulness or journaling to release their grip.

  • Foster a Positive Attitude: Shift your focus to solutions and gratitude to stay empowered and move forward through difficulties.

  • Lack of Motivation: Set achievable goals and celebrate small wins to keep yourself inspired. Pair new habits with things you already enjoy, like listening to a favorite podcast while walking.

  • Overwhelming Expectations:
Start small and focus on one change at a time. Simplify your to-do list and prioritize what matters most.

  • Distractions: Create intentional moments of focus — turn off notifications during mindfulness practices or set boundaries for screen time to stay present.

10 Holistic Living Tips for Beginners

Living holistically is about creating a rhythm in your life that feels natural and supportive.

  1. Listen to Your Body: Listen to how your body feels after meals, activities, or conversations. Holistic living starts with tuning into what your body needs.

  2. Declutter Your Mind and Space: A clean environment supports a clear mind. Set aside 10 minutes to tidy up a small space, or try journaling to offload mental clutter.

  3. Incorporate Moments of Joy: Holistic living isn’t just about big routines — it’s also about sprinkling joy throughout your day. A favorite song, a cup of herbal tea, or a quick stretch break can work wonders.

  4. In Line With the Seasons: Align your lifestyle to the natural flow of the seasons. For example, eat warming foods in winter and lighter meals in summer, or adjust your activities to what each season offers.

  5. Focus on Your Breath: Breathwork is one of the simplest, most effective ways to calm the nervous system. Even a minute of deep breathing can shift your energy.

  6. Be Intentional with Screen Time: Holistic living includes digital health. Create tech-free zones in your home. Set boundaries for when and how you engage with screens. Take breaks from social media.

  7. Simplify Your To-Do List: Instead of trying to do everything, focus on your top three priorities each day. Simplifying helps you stay aligned with what truly matters.

  8. Make Rest a Ritual: Rest isn’t just about sleeping, but allowing your mind and body to recover. Try restorative yoga, meditation, or simply sitting quietly with a book.

  9. Give Yourself Grace: Holistic living isn’t about doing everything perfectly — it’s about showing up with compassion for yourself.

  10. Spend Time in Nature: Nature has an incredible ability to calm the mind and recharge the spirit. A walk in the park, sitting under a tree, or stepping outside for fresh air, helps us feel more grounded and at peace.

Holistic living isn’t a checklist, but a way of life we nurture over time. Let these tips inspire you, but don’t feel like you have to do them all at once. Start with new habits that feel right and build gradually.

What works for someone else may not work for you, and that’s okay. Give yourself the freedom to explore and find a rhythm that aligns with your life.

Living holistically doesn’t have to be hard or complicated. Simplicity is often where we find the good things in life — the joy in the present moment, the space to breathe, and the clarity to focus on what matters.
